Businesses And Their Hours Near Castle View Apartments

N. B. – Holidays and special events change the hours of operation. The hours are accurate as of this writing, but always confirm them during your visit since businesses change their hours of operation frequently. Almost always, ATMs and banks give the best currency exchange rates. If exchange offices appear to have lower rates, always ask how much of a given currency you will receive at the end of the transaction (ie., after ALL "fees, surcharges, etc." are deducted). This “bottom line” amount is always the most important number, not the seemingly "favorable" exchange rates posted on their wall. Local exchange offices in Cesky Krumlov with a good reputation are Smenarna Exchange Office (also known as No.59) at Latran 2 and Latran 38 and the Vltava Travel Agency at Kajovska 62.

Art Galleries

The closest one is Dům Fotografie next door to Castle View Apartments. They feature works by famous artists on a rotating basis. Since their opening hours change frequently, walk next door when you arrive in Cesky Krumlov if you are interested in viewing their exhibits.

ATMs

There are three ATMs in the Main Square of Cesky Krumlov. On the morning after summer weekends/holidays, you may need to use a different ATM if the first ATM you try is "out of cash."

  1. To reach the closest one, turn right when you exit Castle View Apartments. When you reach the Main Square, turn left; the ATM will be on your next left on the side of the Cesky Sporitelna Bank building. (As you face the bank, go around the corner to the left on Horni Street. The ATM will be on your right side.)
  2. A second ATM is on the north west corner of the Main Square at the Oberbank building just to the left of its main entrance.
  3. A third ATM is located on the west side of the Main Square in front of the RaiffeisenBank just to the left of a building with the word "Lekarna" (pharmacy) on it.

Automobile Related Items

For tire repairs, etc., Pneuservis International (Chvalsinska 168) is located just northwest of the main parking lot for the castle. Their telephone number is 380-714-538.

Banks

There are three banks in the Main Square, of which the Oberbank opens the earliest.

  1. To reach the closest one, see the ATM directions above. The Sporitelna Bank is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 until 12:30 when it closes for lunch. It reopens at 13:30 and closes at 16:00, except on Monday and Wednesday when it closes at 17:00.
  2. The Oberbank also mentioned above with the ATMs is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 until 16:00, except on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday when it closes at 17:00. (Jan, 2009 Update- They have recently been closing at 14:30 on Fridays).
  3. For directions to the third bank, the RaiffeisenBank, see the ATMs mentioned above. This bank is open Monday thru Friday from 9:00 until 16:00; at times they extend these hours to 16:30 or 17:00.

Grocery Stores

Note that these stores close during the year when they do “inventory.” Fortunately, they each try to take “inventory” on different days so another store will be open. Unfortunately, the notices are only in the Czech language, but the listed dates on the signs give you clues. Other than opening hours and closing days, what other reason would a store have to list times and dates on its front door?

  1. Although Super Market Potraviny is small and has a limited number of food items for a “supermarket,” it is the only one nearby that is open late Friday and Saturday nights (until 10:30 pm) and Sunday nights (until 10:00 pm). To reach it walk to the main town square and bear to your left. Turn left at the next corner towards and then left on Kajovska Street (you will see the Wax Museum straight ahead as you make this turn). At the next corner turn right, and walk across the bridge. Straight ahead will be the Teta Drogerie (see below). Turn left on Linecka Street, and you will see the grocery store on your right hand side about half way down the block.
  2. For Jednota Potraviny, the closest grocery store, as you exit Castle View Apartments turn left then right as you walk up to Horni Street. At Horni Street turn left. Walk past the small park on the left side with the panoramic views. After you cross the cobblestone bridge and just before you reach the stop light with crosswalk at the main highway, you will see this grocery store to your right beside the main highway near the other crosswalk. They are open Monday through Friday from 7:00 until 17:30. On Saturday they open from 7:00 to 11:30. They are closed on Sunday.
  3. There is a large Potraviny on Latran Street across from the main castle entrance and just before the stone arch over the street. This grocery store usually has very good produce, and they open a second cash register when the primary check-out line gets long. This behavior is a welcomed surprise for a former communist country and is much appreciated by tourists and locals alike! It is open on Sunday from 9:00 to 15:00. On Monday through Friday they open from 7:00 to 18:00. On Saturday they open from 7:00 until 12:00.
  4. For those whose biologic clock has not adjusted to the time differences (in the summer it is daylight before 5:00) and have the sunrise “munchies,” the Supermarket, which opens at 6:00 on week days, is located a stone’s throw from the Cesky Krumlov train station. They are open Saturday morning but closed on Sunday. As you exit by the front door of the train station, look to your left across the tree lined median separating the street, and you will see a genuine “supermarket” between a small clothing store and a store that sells stereos and other small electrical appliances.

Information

Be sure to visit the Infocentrum, located on the northeast corner of the Main Square to the right of the Town Hall and police station. As you exit Castle View Apartments, turn right; the Infocentrum will be straight ahead on your right side adjacent to the covered walkway. Off season their hours are 9:00 to 17:00 each day. On Saturday, Sunday, and holidays, they close from 13:00 until 14:00. During high season their opening hours are longer. Their helpful staff which speaks several languages has computers for checking email, a booking service for cultural activities and city tours, large posters with bus and train schedules, and detailed information including room photos about local hotels, pensions, hostels, etc. Naturally we hope you won’t use this last part of their services but will stay at Castle View Apartments! In the back of the Infocentrum is a gift shop with postcards, maps, travel books, phone cards, etc. There is another information center with computers to check one’s email at the Castle complex on the right side as you enter by the main gate. Recently a third information center opened in the Cesky Krumlov train station just to the right as you exit the train.

Laundromat

Just past the Potraviny on Latran Street (see grocery stores above) before it makes a ninety degree turn to the right is the Lobo Laundromat on the far left side of the street. Its off season hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 until 16:00. On Saturdays it closes at 12:00; on Sundays it is closed all day. During high season their opening hours are longer.

Pharmacy

The closest one has the sign Lekarna above it on the north west corner of the main square. They are open from 8:00 to 12:00 and from 13:00 to 16:00 from Monday through Friday.

Photo Shop

The closest is to the right of the Infocentrum and on the right side of the covered passageway across from a door to the Infocentrum. It is open 9:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 15:00 Monday through Fridays. Another photo shop is located to the left of the Oberbank on the right side of the street about mid way down this block.

Restaurants

Most Czech meals are a vegetarian’s nightmare since they are based on pork and other meats.

  1. The closest restaurant to Castle View Apartments is across from our front door! Krcma V Satlavska is a quaint open fireplace restaurant that starts serving at noon. When you see the thick walls and ceiling, it is easy to understand that this was a former jail. They feature roasted meats and other Czech specialties; during warm weather there is outside dining.
  2. The closest vegetarian restaurant is the Laibon on Parkan Street; it has riverfront dining in warm weather and opens at 11:00. To reach it, walk from the Main Square towards the Castle. Just before you cross the River, turn right on Parkan, and the restaurant is on the left side.
  3. The Krcma U dwau Maryi is another riverfront restaurant on Parkan Street (next door to the restaurant Laibon) that specializes in authentic Bohemian dishes. During warm weather you will see many canoes being paddled down the Vltava River just a few yards in front of your table.

Toilet Articles

  1. For directions to Teta Drogerie, the closest one, see Super Market Potraviny above. It is open from 8:00 until 17:30 Mondays through Friday and on Saturday from 8:00 until noon. It carries a wide range of products not limited to toilet articles.
  2. To reach another drogerie, as you exit Castle View Apartments, turn right and walk to the Main Square. Between Oberbank and the Town Hall, you will see the Castle Tower in the distance across the river. Cross the bridge, and then walk up Latran Street. Before you reach the top of the hill, you will see the Droxi Drogerie on your right side. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 until 18:30. On Saturday it is open from 8:00 until 13:00 but closed on Sunday. It carries primarily toilet articles.
  3. Two stores up the street from the Droxi Drogerie is the Barvy Laky Drogerie which has more of an emphasis on products to maintain one’s home, car, etc. than on products to maintain one’s personal appearance!
